He set new standards for both comic and serious opera before retiring from large-scale composition while still in his thirties Gioachino Rossini, in full Gioachino Antonio Rossini, (born February 29, 1792, Pesaro, Papal States [Italy]—died November 13, 1868, Passy, near Paris, France), Italian composer noted for his operas, particularly his comic operas, of which The Barber of Seville (1816), Cinderella (1817), and Semiramide (1823) are among the best known.

Although the Italian composer did write many songs, chamber works, and piano pieces, his 39 operas are what propelled him to fame during his time and what keeps his name alive in concert programs around the world. Gioacchino Antonio Rossini was born in Pesaro, the son of musicians, and studied at the Bologna Conservatory from 1806 to 1810. At 18 he had his first opera performed in Venice, the one-act farce "La Cambiale di matrimonio" ("The Marriage Contract"), and within three years he had written eight more.
